Re: Synlait Milk Ltd Boys and Girls Agricultural Club Championship Day

Canterbury A&P Association invites your school to participate in the Synlait Milk Ltd Boys and Girls Agricultural Club Championship Day to be held at the Canterbury Agricultural Park on Thursday 19 November 2015 at 10am – please present your animals on the Cattle Lawns by the Show Office.

To qualify for this day the participants will need to have attended a school pet parade day and an Area/Group day within their Region.  Classes will include calves, lambs, goats, pigs, poultry, alpacas and llamas.  The classes will be split into two age group sections: Juniors being years 1-4, and Seniors years 5-8.

All children that qualify to attend the Championship Day will need to have completed a full project on the care, handling and rearing of the pet.  These project books will need to be handed into the office of the Canterbury A&P Association at Canterbury Agricultural Park, Curletts Road, Christchurch by Friday 6 November 2015.

Important - Please label your project with your full name, school, year and category you will be competing in i.e. Dairy Calves.  

We hope you will give consideration and encouragement to your pupils to attend this day which in the past has been very successful.

Adopt A Chicken

This year we have the opportunity to ADOPT CHICKENS!

This is your chance to rear three students the opportunity to rear three one-day-old Brown Shaver hen chicks to show them for Pet Day at school (30^th Oct) then against other schools for Group (5^th Nov) and on Championship Day at the Canterbury Show Grounds (19^th Nov).

Costs:

$ 12 Three chicks (had their salmonella spray and chick vaccine.)

$ 12 A heat lamp

$ 10 Chick Crumbles 10kg (till 8 weeks old)

$ 10 Cook Grower 10 kg (8 weeks till point of lay)

$ 20 Layer Pellets 15kg (laying birds)

Your chicks will be delivered on Friday, 18 September, leaving 6 weeks to rear them and get them ready for School Pet Day.

Urgent: they must be ordered by Thursday this week. Make your order by e-mailing Allana with your name, the number of chickens (in groups of three) and a contact phone number. Payment is required by the following week please.

Project Book - requirements and marking 2015

Each school has their own marking plan and looks for different things but what we do here at Springston might give you some ideas on how to plan out your Animal Project Book.

The project will be marked on this sheet and it gives you all the information you need about how to earn points towards getting a FIRST!

You will be judged in three different age groups: These are ages on Pet Day.

Seniors 11+ years

Intermediate 8 - 10 years

Junior 5 - 7 years













Show that you have good knowledge:
All the categories down this right hand side will be looked at and highlighted if you include them. Look at this sheet as you plan your project.  We suggest you have a contents page and sections for each category listed on the marking page. Look carefully at the sheet we give you. It gives you lots more detail about what to include.

How to earn the most points you can:
Complete your project on A4 paper - typed or hand written.
Show that you have made a great effort - for you.
Make sure you have included all the things above like description, shelter etc.
Keep a regular and detailed diary of what you do with your pet.
Include a graph of growth or weight.
Write research from key notes, not by copying or sticking in printed sheets form the Internet.
Acknowledge your sources - the book, person or web address.
Present your project so it is easy to read and looks like you care about it.

How to get a FIRST:

At Springston School we count up the Project Book marks to see if you receive a first. Lots of children can all receive a first. 

1st   34 - 40 points

2nd  28 - 33 points

3rd   22 - 27 points

4th   21 - 15 points

This and your Pet Day judging results give you points towards the Agricultural Day Badges.

Going on to Group and Championship Days:

You do not need a Project Book to participate in the Group Day but bring yours along if you intend to carry onto Area or Championship Day.  We will deliver it to the judges and the you can collect it on the day of competition.  Remember to bring any Championship Day cups you earned last year and them with the project books to be delivered.

Ready for Championship Day:

Your Project Book needs to be labelled with this on the front cover.  Print one off and use it or get a copy from Allana.

Pet Day is Coming! 2015

Now is the time to be looking around for the pet you want to be hand rearing and training ready for Pet Day.

Your pet lamb, chicken, goat, calf, alpaca, pig..... must have been born after 1st July so anytime this month or later is good.

Top Tips:
Weigh your animal on a regular basis and take photos to show their growth.
Begin keeping a diary - not every day but everyday you do something with your pet.
Start doing some research about your animal and begin your Pet Day Project Book.
